I think most turntable dust covers are made from acrylic (frequently polymethyl methacrylate or something similar) because it's easily injection molded and comes out clear and doesn't discolor/yellow much at all over time from exposure to sunlight.Styrene is more brittle than acrylic, the clear version has a faintly blue tint, and is more fragile than acrylic.

Sounds like a weak or broken latch spring.
