DISSOLVE AND REFINE SILVER WITH POORS MAN NITRIC ACID | Gold Refining

First thing is get proficient at making your nitric acid, there are many threads here on the forum about that process. Second is decide how you want to refine the silver. That depends on which form you are getting your silver. The options are dissolve the Silver in your nitric and cement it on copper and make up a cell.

The information on the forum is not organized. Sure, I can find information on websites but not on the tutorials category of the forum. Usually these posts are set as sticky and are posts that should be made to be fixed with information you know is completely right, not someone that did something and that worked with no good scientific explanation.

Can I re-use HNO3+H202

H2O2 will be used up by the reaction it self, but also decompose slowly in time. Heat also rapid the H2O2 decomposition. Silver reaction to nitric acid: 3 Ag + 4 HNO 3 = 3 AgNO 3 + NO + 2 H 2 O The NO(g) generated by the reaction with Silver, is re-oxidized by the water (or H2O2) to form back Nitric acid and hydrogen.

"NOTE: When substituting nitrates for nitric acid in Poorman's AR here are some handy numbers: 1. When used to dissolve gold powders use 4 mL of 31% HCl per gram of gold plus: 1.343 g NaNO3 (sodium nitrate) per gram of gold to be dissolved. or 1.597 g KNO3 (potassium nitrate) per gram of gold to be dissolved. 2.

HDPE will hold up somewhat, PTFE and other fluoromers are best for ALL acids and that is what I use for my HNO3, HF, H2SO4, SO3, N2H4, Br2, etc. Generally speaking, most non-fluorinated plastics don't hold up well to HNO3 over long periods of time. Or you could just use aluminum. Nitric won't affect aluminum as it is an oxidizing acid.

this is a very broad question and has no simple answer. if you want to distill nitric acid, which makes the best acid for use with silver, you will need potassium nitrate or salt peter. if you want to make "one pot method" nitric acid, then sodium nitrate should be used but this is a poor choice for silver refining. ammonium nitrate should be avoided in reactions involving …

Concentration of Nitric Acid needed for refining Silver. | Gold

Silver forms fairly insoluble sulfate's so we need a purer nitric acid, free of sulfates where possible, for use with silver. Some sulfates in nitric or aqua regia are not a problem for gold, or most base metals and the sulfate could be somewhat helpful as it makes lead insoluble in the gold chloride solution.

distill off NO2 bubble into water to make nitric acid, if less than 68% concentration can boil off water untill it reach's 68% further boiling will boil off your 68% acid, if stronger acid needed for some unknown reason, you would need to add 2 times the amount of sulfuric acid and distill off somewhere greater than 80% maybe stronger up to fuming acids.if doing this check …

68% nitric is all we need to refine with, a dilute nitric acid can be concentrated to 68% easily, this is the approximate azeotrope of nitric acid, you cannot concentrate further than this without special proceedures, as further evaporation will just vapor off 68%. higher concentrations can be made but have no use in refining.
